OF QUIZ SHOWS AND OF LOVE

[Man! This is purely talks about one thing: Quiz Shows. I know this is long but I believe that those I get to compete with and those who watch them, will read this thorougly. This is from my wordpress. Odyssey!]
knocked out.

Addiction. It is the best word for it. I just cannot resist myself.
The feeling of raising a cardboard, with a word or a phrase which always comes with luck, petrifies me into something wild.
Every time I see the faces of my opponents who are too anxiously eager to see what answers the screens
will project, hearts go pounding insane.
When correct answers dissolve out, people go screaming and yelling like they will never have points anymore.
Every event is sensational. Every question matters.
As someone who dares to compete, I bring with me the hopes of people from my organization. But hey! I must be hypocrite if I wouldn’t say that self- fulfillment is the best part of winning.
The Marker, SLAAP, MSU-Scholars Society, MSU-KAPARIZ, Eyoners’ Club, MSU-Honors Program, the Comm. Stud. Department, Tourism Department, Historical Society, College of Information Technology, etc. I am not talking about the semi-academic organizations, departments, colleges or societies in the campus but the things they sponsor that always keep me asking more.
Darn, there they go! QUIZ SHOWS.

I used to join Quiz Shows way back High School days. I was always this student in High School who cared about matters that are not taught inside the classroom. If not extracurricular, then at least I cared about matters that are noteworthy. I would not stop with something until I found out something which is not of common knowledge about it. And maybe all the verbs deserve to be got rid of letter ‘d’ in their past tenses because I still do the same. Until now. The most memorable one maybe is the individual quiz show for our Science Week Celebration. It was a huge event partaken by almost all bookworms from all year levels plus all the teachers
in the stage watching. The venue was not less than our school court. I was first year high school then. There were several eliminations until I managed sending myself to the final round. I eventually won the competition because I knew that Olympus Mons is the largest mountain in the Solar System. This incident became a milestone I kept from then on.

At first, I never had the idea that here in Mindanao State University- Main Campus, Marawi City, I would find a battleground of quizzers that are ready for any action. I had been too preoccupied for an English 1 midterm examination when an unusual poster struck me out. It called quiz enthusiasts to gather up for an annual Intercollegiate Quiz Show. This was sponsored by SLAAP. It then became the first Quiz Show I have seen. Teams from CNSM, CSSH and CBAA reigned during the final round. I was so proud of being a CBAA student because they really were amazing. The difference of their score from others during the first two elimination rounds was a landslide. They came up 2nd runner- up though and as for those who won and why they won, I merely did not just try to care about them. The quiz show was explosive. When they debated as for the validity of an answer, the atmosphere suddenly changed. That made me even more invigorated to join one myself.

My first real joining was during the MSU-Scholars’ Society Campus Quiz Show. It was the first Quiz Show I joined individually. The game was amazing. The questions were raveling. And the best part, the opponents. They were Quiz Giants of the campus. I joined it with the least knowledge I had. I didn’t have any single idea what the Quiz Show was all about not until I reached semi-finals then I was eliminated. It was the first experience of an excruciating loss. I felt to dumbstruck. The Quiz Show traditionally honors its top 10 quizzers and calls them SUPERBS. I almost made it there for the first time if I had just spelled Hillary Duff as Hilary only, without the second ‘L’. I had to break the tie with a young quizzer as well. We vied for 2 questions both answering correctly until the 3rd question asked about the season of American Idol where David C. and David A. competed. I answered 8, my opponent wrote 7. Of course I assume you know he won eventually. Oh well, I blamed myself for always hooking up with the next season and its advertisements that I answered 8 despite I knew it was 7. The shame was very disgusting for me. I happen to brand the category ENTERTAINMENT as my forte but yet, I lost because of it. And so, I started to correct whatever it was that had been wrong and filled out spaces in my knowledge notwithstanding information overload . So I continued.

After a major loss, I went on with my first major win. We championed the Quiz Wizard Supremacy sponsored by the Integrated Quizzers Club of CNSM on Feb 13, 2010. It was a Friday-the- thirteenth but with my teammates Mohammad Muariff Balang and Bin Jadid Macapaar, we kicked the bad luck out. Though the event has been served for high school students, I still believe that CNSM IQC makes the best questions during Quiz Shows. I really liked the fact that they asked something I considered very radical. It was the title of the book written by Adolf Hitler when he was imprisoned. Mein Kampf. I couldn’t be misspelling it. They had an error though when they projected “AGATHA CRISTIE”. I believe she has letter ‘H’ before R in her family name. I was reluctant to protest so I just let that go. How I wish their Quiz Show will revert to the type that arouses college folks. I cannot think much about other quiz shows two years ago because I really didn’t have the opportunities joining them due to my freshness. No one seemed to rely on a neophyte.

When I turned 2nd year, quiz shows showed some patterns. Whenever I held my own team, we always came out only second best behind CNSM IQC. It definitely was their golden year. Except for the SLAAP ’s and the DictioQuiz I guess, they went out of the arena bringing the trophy of the champion. It was Kuya Rashid Pandi and the rest if his gang who ripped awards off. It was during this year that one of my most irritating Quiz Show moments happened. With the same team, Kuya Ron and Kuya Bench, on the Intercollegiate Quiz Show of SLAAP, we defeated CNSM-IQC making them the 2nd runner-up after we completed enumerating the major gods and goddesses of Greek mythology. Everything seemed fulfilling. Not until the CSSH team answered “Lighthouse Alexandria ” letting them claim a spot that enabled them to be declared victors. I just cannot forgive the panelist who considered this answer and partly, for the team members themselves, for being too naïve and continuing to raise their board despite the grammatical aspect of it. There was also this issue about a question that let us enumerate countries. I remember Kuya Ron clarified it before we did answer. Yet, at the end of the time given, it still sprouted to a dispute due to misunderstanding. And so, whatever it may have been, I still enjoyed the feeling of conducting a Quiz Show in the Gymnasium.

MMQS 2009. 2nd Runner-up. I wasn’t applying for membership in the MSU-HONORS PROGRAM when I was a freshman and so I enjoyed the chance of joining the Quiz Show. It was all related to what we see on the internet, on the television, on the news. With Kuya Sanny-din Usodan and Kuya Ron again, we managed to be 2nd runners-up behind the undying tension of MSU-KAPARIZ and the eventual champion, CNSM-IQC. HP served a Quiz Show which I considered boring. I can clearly recall a round whose all questions asked about movies that are not yet released. And I said, “Oh, come on! This is so boring”. This is what I envisioned to change. That’s why I took the opportunity of being the Quiz Show chairman this year.

I also joined the DictioQuiz Show for the first time with teammates, Sittie Ayesha Lacelle Gadia and Alexa Marie Similatan. Despite being only in the 5th place, it wasn’t a bad start for all- beginners like us. It was the team from CHARM which was hailed champion on this.

The Chronicles 2009. 1st Runner- up. When there are losses, there must be some winnings. As applicants of MSU- Honors Program, I joined The Marker’s The Chronicles, a Quiz Show with solely HISTORY as the category. I had so much fun answering questions which happened to be stuffs I have read just prior to the event. When we came to the final round and scored at least next to the CNSM-IQC, many have raised their eyebrows. I bet they were wondering who we were. I was with ate Aye Gadia and Rowen Descallar in this Quiz Show. It was a very powerful sensation to do the clincher round with the team composed of members of MSU-HP themselves. We defeated them by answering and spelling Warren Buffett correctly. They answered Buffett without the second ‘T’. And so we won. This has started the flame that burned inside of me.

MSUSSCQS 2010. 2nd runner-up. I joined MSU-Scholar Society’s Campus Quiz Show again. But this time, they decided to hold it in the gym. The new twist with the quiz show boggled things up. Players must have their teams first before they can proceed to the individual rounds. It was a great feeling to lead the first two rounds. I was with the same team with my gang during THE CHRONICLES. It was also very fulfilling to have the highest score during the semi-finals. Yet, I answered wrong twice during the final round by misspelling them. After breaking the tie with Ate Aye and a High School Student for ISIS, I came out 2nd- runner up. Coming second best with 2 CNSM-IQC members who were declared champion and 1st runner-up.

Talking about Science-Math Quiz Show by the Eyoners’ Club, I have joined it only when I was 2nd year. I just cannot afford to talk about it, not because I am an Accountancy student that’s why I couldn’t relate but because I believe this Quiz Show is out of my league.

CNSM-IQC was very outrageous when we were just 3rd place during last year’s KAMBATALO behind the International Relations department on the second place. IQC also championed the Political Science Quiz Show. I played with teammates Junver rcayna and kuya Ron. Only winning 1st runners-up. Though that year wasn’t that much successful, at least, I somehow made my name clearer in the map of Campus Quizzing.

As for the Quiz Shows this year- my silver year, only silver because I lost 3 quiz shows. Gold is for a grand slam and cleanly no loss. I could only tell the results and not specific details. I cannot do such because it would take much time. And besides, here I am again, preparing for another Quiz Show next week.

Doomsday. inherited. got ‘em. borrowed. doomsday frontview.

I just cannot imagine college life without Quiz Shows. People know me because of them and I love the feeling that a lot of people believe in you. Win or lose. It is not whether we win or lose, it is how we play the game. For specific matters regarding other quiz shows, I’ll keep you posted.
